Key Stage 1 Enrichment

Lyme Regis

As part of their ‘Fossil Hunter’ topic, children in Sycamore, Beech and Elm Class visited Lyme Regis. They used clues to find where Mary Anning lived and found the newly erected statue of Mary Anning, which overlooks the place where she would have searched for fossils. It was an exciting adventure where the children followed in the footsteps of this amazing palaeontologist to fossil hunt on the very same beach.

Artist Visit

Children in Elm, Beech and Sycamore Class worked collaboratively to create this huge piece dedicated to Queen Elizabeth II, who is a significant person in their Castles & Monarchs topic they’ll be learning about later this year. This piece was built up from scratch, completely child led and using recycled materials. We’re so proud of their amazing results!

Bude Canal Trip

The children met with Chris from the Bude Canal Society who told them all about the history of the canal (and why it was built), he then explained how the canal was accessed and used.

The children then walked along the canal, observing the geographical features, to the bird hide to see what wildlife lives along, and in, the canal – this was led by another member of the BCS – Peter (whose mum used to work at Holsworthy Primary). He also told the children about the history of some of the buildings along the canal side.

Thomas Farriner Storyteller Workshop

Children in Elm, Beech and Sycamore Class received an exciting visit from ‘Thomas Farriner’.

Children from all classes listened intently to the storytelling session, answered a range of question showing the knowledge they had learnt from the story and asked inquisitive questions. Following this, they took part in some drama activities where they worked together to create freeze frames of key parts of the story. Finally, they produced some superb sketches of Thomas Farriner’s treasures.

Lego STEM SESSIONS

This half term, pupils in Elm, Beech and Sycamore Class are completing a Lego STEM Project with Cognition Learning and so much fun and learning is taking place!

Just walking past the classrooms, you can instantly see the enjoyment and the fabulous teamwork going on, with so many National Curriculum objectives being met.

Explorer Dome Visit

To introduce their topic ‘Hot and Cold’ pupils in Key Stage 1 were treated to an exciting visit to the explorer dome. Whilst in the dome, they visited a range of places across the world, looking at the weather patterns and the animals that lived there. They learnt how clouds and rainbows were formed and had interactive experiments to demonstrate this.

Also as part of this they looked at pollution and climate change and discussed ways we could help protect our planet.

Really Wild Learning Visit

To conclude their topic ‘Hot and Cold’ children in Key Stage 1 had visits from animals that live in the areas they have studied. As part of this visit, they determined which areas of the world each animal lived in and learnt further facts about the animals such as their adaptations to their habitats.

They also adored having the opportunity to hold or touch the animals if they wished. Some of the animals that visited were: snakes, to bearded dragons, scorpions, geckos, frogs, tarantulas and much more!

Multi Skills

Children in Sycamore Class took recently took part in a Multi-Skills tournament against other local schools. They enjoyed taking part in various activities, further developing their skills. Speedbounce was a particular favourite, along with various throwing, jumping, catching and agility based activities.
