Read Write Inc.
We are a Read Write Inc. school.
This means that we prioritise early reading in our school and believe it is our job to ensure every child is given the best opportunity to learn to read. The RWI scheme allows for specific, refined teaching in small, carefully selected groups. Children are systematically and thoroughly taught individual sounds (phonemes), their relevant graphemes and word blending. Phonics are taught until children become fluent readers who can comprehend what they’ve read. At this point, they will move on to our Accelerated Reader scheme.
Read Write Inc. is a programme which encompasses regular, targeted training for staff members; giving your child an excellent opportunity to work with highly skilled practitioners. The scheme also allows for regular assessment to ensure children move on to the next challenge in a timely manner. This prepares them well for their Year 1 Phonics Screening Check – the government’s way of assessing phonic knowledge. The PSC happens each year in the summer term (note: children who did not pass in year 1 will retake the PSC in year 2).
Your child will receive two phonetically decodable books each week, which have been carefully matched to their specific sound knowledge at any given point. Alongside this, a school library book which is purely to promote reading for pleasure. Please ensure you celebrate your child’s reading successes to encourage them, and build a love of reading with your child at home by enjoying other books together.
